Author's Notes/Summary: Something’s troubling Adam, and Hamish wants to know what it is.

I Dare You
“Hey, hey Adam, is there anything you won’t do?” Hamish said, well aware he sounded drunk. He was leaning against Adam’s balcony, smiling at him, probably holding a drink in one hand. He wasn’t sure exactly what time it was, but he figured it didn’t matter. It was night. He only had to walk as far as Adam’s bed before he could collapse asleep.

He noticed Adam hadn’t answered his question. He seemed to be lost in thought, staring at the floor, hunched over on the couch.

“Somethin’ wrong, Adam?” Hamish said. He thought about moving, but his spinning head quickly convinced him moving was a bad idea.

“No, it’s nothing-” Adam said, dismissively.

“Tell me,” Hamish said.

“I said it’s nothing,” Adam said.

“Well, it can’t be nothing, or you wouldn’t be looking so fucking miserable,” Hamish said. He finally decided to move, and half-fell against the couch, clumsily sitting beside Adam.

There was silence for a while. Hamish thought he set his drink down on the floor next to him. He watched Adam slowly sipping his, wondering what on earth was bugging him. He decided not to speak, to let Adam tell him in his own time.

“You’d tell me to stop if I ever tried to make you do something you didn’t want to do, yeah?” Adam said after a while.

“Uh, yeah, why wouldn’t I? What’s this about?” Hamish said, confused.

“Oh, nothing, I just-” Adam inhaled abruptly, as if there was something blocking the words from coming out.

“What the fuck’s wrong? Just out and tell me, will you?” Hamish said, annoyed at his stubbornness.

“I had a dream a week ago. I was strangling you. You tried to fight me, but-” There was that sharp inhalation again. “It was too late. I wanted to play, and you didn’t want to, and I got angry and then-” That seemed to be all Adam could say.

“It was just a dream, Adam,” Hamish said, wrapping an arm around his shoulders.

“But what if I-”

“Shh. Let it go. It wasn’t real,” Hamish said, bringing Adam close to him.

“You’re not worried about this?” Adam said.

“Why should I be worried? You’re not going to go psycho on me are you? You certainly don’t strike me as particularly psychotic,” Hamish said, stifling a laugh in a bit to lighten the mood.

“I watched your face turn blue. I took your life with my bare hands. All because you didn’t want to play. You should stay away from me,” Adam said, pulling away.

“Don’t be like this. I’m not afraid of you. I trust you more than I trust anyone else,” Hamish said.

“Stop it. Just – leave me alone. Every time I see you, I remember that dream. Something… I should go before I hurt you,” Adam said, standing up.

“OK, now you’re scaring me,” Hamish said, standing up, shutting his eyes tight as his brain protests at the movement.

“Just go, leave me alone. I need to be away from you or I’m afraid I might hurt you,” Adam said, keeping his back to him.

“Seriously, Adam, I think you’re taking this a bit too seriously. It was just a dream, nothing more. You’ve never given me any reason to be afraid of you. Why are you so scared?” Hamish said.

“Because I fucking enjoyed it, Hamish. There was nothing but glee as I held you down and strangled you. Hurting you is something I’m terrified of doing. I love you too much to hurt you. You know I’d never hurt you, right?” Adam said, looking over his shoulder back at him.

“I’ve never been afraid of you. I know you’d never hurt me. You’re even too afraid to bite me sometimes, even when I’m telling you to hurry up and bite me already,” Hamish said with a grin.

“I’m sorry, I just don’t want to hurt you. You’re too precious to me,” Adam said.

“I’m a big boy. I know how to take care of myself. I know the age difference isn’t easy to live with, but I’m not a child, for fuck’s sake. I don’t need to be treated as if I’m going to break if you drop me. I’m tougher than that. I’m not made of porcelain. I don’t need to be mollycoddled. And if you’re going to let some stupid dream bug you so badly, then-” Hamish stopped because he had run out of words.

“Then what?” Adam said, slightly amused at Hamish’s outburst.

“I just think you’re taking this far too seriously. You shouldn’t be so afraid of hurting me you won’t touch me at all, dream or no dream. I want to be close to you. I’m not a doll. I’m not here for you to admire. I’m here because I love you. I want to touch you, be close to you, be able to fuck you, kiss you, tease you. I can’t do that if you’re too afraid to touch me,” Hamish said, surprisingly coherent. He walked up behind Adam and wrapped his arms around his waist, holding him tightly. He was surprised to feel Adam flinch at his touch. He leant his chin against his shoulder, trying to calm him down.

“Just don’t let me lose control. I couldn’t live with myself if ever forced you to do something you didn’t want to do,” Adam said softly.

“It’ll be alright. It’s just a dream, nothing more. I’d only be concerned if you actually started threatening me. Then I’d have to bitchslap you until you came to your senses. Just let it go, love. You don’t need this stress, and I’m certainly not going to run away from you simply because you’ve had a bad dream,” Hamish said with a small laugh, running his fingers through Adam’s hair.

Adam held him back, pressing his back against him. Hamish had a way of getting through to him when he was troubled. Adam took a deep breath and did his best to send the dream on its way. Perhaps what he had been searching for all week was Hamish’s permission to let it go, which seemed absurd now. Still, he felt a weight had been lifted from him. Sometimes you needed to be reminded that life was more important than dreams.

“What would I ever do without you?” Adam said with a grin.

Hamish simply smiled and softly kissed his neck. “You’d have gone mad by now, I reckon,” he teased.

“Then I’d be justified in going psychotic, hey?” Adam said.

“Maybe. Why? Wanna find out?” Hamish said, pulling away from him.

Adam turned and grinned at him. “Are you gonna let me hit you now, hey?” he said, stalking forward.

“I never said that. But I won’t complain if you bit me. Just make it hard lik-”

Hamish was cut off as Adam attacked him, pushing him back inside the flat as he bit down hard on his shoulder. All Hamish made was this small squeaking noise as he was pushed back onto the couch, Adam still biting him hard. The pain was glorious. It was the only sort of pain Hamish could stand.

Adam’s hands were tugging at his shirt, his fingers sliding against his skin, and Hamish lay there squirming, happy, hands clutching Adam tightly, knowing they were both getting off on this. Adam was grinding against him slowly, furiously biting his neck, occasionally stopping to suck on the tender skin, causing Hamish to shiver beneath him.

This, Hamish decided, was how things were meant to be. This was the Adam he wanted.
