Summary: The words Joe could never say to Kevin.

“Loyalty is very important in politics, it’s very important in life and I don’t think any of us were afraid of losing or were prepared to trade loyalty for losing.”

How I hated myself as I said those words. I believed them then, and still believe them. Loyalty is very important, and I suppose it wouldn’t have troubled me so much if my heart hadn’t been torn in two directions. Kevin always knew how to distract me.

Costello knew. Tony knew. I should've known I couldn't hide from them. John didn't know; at least, when he told me our friendship was harming the party and should end, he didn't know the true extent of our relationship. But he shamed me. I was being disloyal to the party. It had to end. I knelt and pledged my loyalty, and swore to sever our friendship. None of that was a lie. The party comes first. Always. You can't survive if you aren't loyal to your party. Unity is everything.

That didn’t make the decision any easier. I’m glad it was you who suggested it. It meant not having to hurt you. I was strong for you then. You needed me and I was there, even if my heart was breaking.

I never got to tell you anyway. The party always comes first. Some canyons are far too wide to cross. I’m sorry.

Summary: In some far away rented room, Kevin muses and tries to sleep while Joe sleeps beside him.

I look over at you to reassure myself that you're still here. These secret meetings often seem like dreams. Maybe it's the darkness we surround ourselves with. I can barely see you. The dim glow from the street light outside doesn't lend us its light.

If we were ever caught, it'd be a political nightmare. Not now. Not when I'm Prime Minister and you're a Shadow Minister. I often wonder if we shouldn't just stop meeting like this. It's an incredible risk we both take to share such intimacy, and it takes an incredible amount of concentration to keep it concealed.

I always worry. You always tell me to relax. I want to sleep, but I'm always afraid there's someone waiting outside to ambush us and expose our affair. It would be a scandal of epic proportions. But I need this. You calm me.

“I thought you were going to sleep. Switch off that bloody brain of yours,” you mumble to me.

“Can’t. Don’t know how,” I reply.

“You don’t need me. This? It’s all procrastination. Howard killed whatever we once felt for each other. This is us trying to find some sort of comfort in a big, bad world,” you say.

Sometimes I wish we would get caught. At least then it’d be out in the open. But you’ll never allow it. You insist on reminding me we’re not on the same side, never have been. We are sworn enemies. We fuck because it feels good screwing you over.

“Go to sleep, Kevin.”

I sigh and lie back, trying to relax. It’s never as easy as it seems, but I always sleep well when you’re by my side.

Author's Notes: Thank fuck for something that isn’t an angsty internal monologue. XD though given the reference which this is based around, this is set, oh, now-ish. Maybe a bit later tonight. Something like that. :P
Summary: Kevin tries to convince Joe to help him pass their $42bn stimulation package.

“‘We will not be silenced’, hey? ‘We will not be gagged’? I beg to differ, Joe,” Kevin said, swinging the keys to the padlocks around a finger.

Joe had stopped squirming some time ago. In spite of his passion, there were times where Kevin would always have his way. It was how he ended up bound and gagged in some utterly forgettable room in Canberra. Joe was beginning to get infuriated at his lack of power. Kevin was taking their relationship to an entirely new level.

Kevin flexed the cane, swishing it through the air. “I’m beginning to feel like a school teacher, Joe. Did they cane you at school, Joe? I bet they did. I should cane you for opposing what’s good for this country, but then you are a cunt, remember?”

Joe sighed at the reference. He had a feeling Kevin would do whatever he wanted. He steadied his feet and waited for Kevin to strike.

Kevin smirked and swung the cane again. This time, it hit flesh, and all that revealed as such was the muffled cry of pain Joe gave. Kevin moved around to face him.

“Convince Turnbull to side with us and I’ll stop,” Kevin said, removing the gag.

“Not on your life, traitor,” Joe hissed.

“Very well. Don’t say I didn’t give you an escape clause,” Kevin said.

Joe was gagged again. Kevin pressed a kiss to his forehead before disappearing behind him again. Joe closed his eyes as the cane struck him again. He was going to feel this for weeks.
