The Infanta -- a longer and hopefully more coherent summary thereof
Because it's quite possibly the most complicated set of relationships ever, with the same amount of complicated gender fuckage to boot, have some cheat notes so I don't have to have hundreds of Author's Notes when I post it. :P
Hopefully, writing it all out will help clarify it all in my mind as well as yours. Also, I should change the title to The Infante because the child is a boy, but I can't be fucked. Maybe I will when the damn thing's finished.
And I'm doing this for this fic in particular because the others are far more self-explanatory. This one requires cheat notes.
The Cast
Hopefully, this will make the relationships clearer. Wiki has given me enough to get the titles and name formats etc mostly accurate, or at least as accurate as they should be for the AU I'm writing. Age and sex in brackets.
It is fanfic in disguise, as someone insisted they all have properly Spanish names, even though they're all the usual people I write about; however, some names translated better than others, so if there wasn't a Spanish equivalent that I could find (granted, I didn't look very hard), I picked something else. Hence some are easier to pick than others as to who they might be. The rest are OCs. And some have boy names and girl titles (or girl names and boy titles) because that's just how it happened. Differences in the gendering of titles vs the person themselves eg a female King etc.
Spanish Royal Family:
HM The King Vera Maria de Pilar de Borbón (44, female)
HM The Queen Tania (46, female) (...She was supposed to have other names, I just didn't quite get around to it. XD)
HRH The Príncipe Rafael (21, male) and Princesa Kiyane (19, male) of Asturias, Duque and Duquesa de Soria (i.e. the Crown prince and princess)
HRH The Infante Javier de Borbón (17, male)
HRH The Infanta Isabel de Borbón (15, female)
HRH The Infante Carlos Juan de Borbón (3 mnths, male)
(Kiyane is eldest daughter of the Moroccan King, hence the not Spanish name)
Extended Family: (of the Spanish King Vera I)
HRH The Infante Carlos Enrique y de Borbón (42, male), Gran Duque de Frías and HE Gran Duquesa Andres de Frías (38, male)
HRH The Infante Domingo Maria Cavallero de Borbón, Gran Duque de Calabria (39, male)
Both are younger brothers of the King. Infante Domingo acts in a more vizier-like role and lives in the Palace. He is the King's closest confidante. Infante Carlos lives in a small estate in the south of the country with his wife and only comes to Court when the King calls for him.
Moroccan Royal Family:
HM The King (56, male)
HM The Queen (51, female)
HRH The Princess Amina (16, female)
(I've been lazy and not given the King and Queen names yet. I should do that at some point.)
Other Families:
Duque Adán Alvarez de Castillo (37, male), Grandeza de Espana and Duque of Medina-Sidonia and Duquesa Diego Cortes Hernandez (32, female)
Catalina Alvarez Cortes (15, female)
Second daughter (12, female)
Third daughter (10, female)
(Yes, they need names too. XD)
Barón Guilermo Torres Salazar (33, male) and Baronesa Pablo Pena Vaques (38, male)
Foreign Nobles:
HRH Prince Elán François Castel, 1st Duc de Rivoli, 1st Prince d'Essling (French) (43, male) -- rules his own Principality and offers a safe haven for foreign nobles. He and Infante Carlos are close friends.
Staff at the Spanish Palace:
Maria de Luz Pinar Corres, head matron type person (57, female)
Juliano Dominguez de Garcia, nursemaid (36, male) -- acquires a wetnurse when needed.
The World
It's set in Spain in the 18th Century. It's also an AU, because the country is NOT Catholic. They follow deeply the ancient Roman religion still. There are Temples and priests and healers and such. They were never swayed by Christianity, and parts of Europe still are Roman, and others Greek, and such things.
No, I don't know why, it's just what the world told me it was. Didn't stop half of them getting Christianity-related names though. XD
Settings will invariably include the Royal Palace, various chapels and Temples, estates and gardens. Oh, and a mountain or two.
It seems to be a rather tolerant place, though heteronormativeness is preferred for the raising of children and such. Though some mpreg appears to have slipped in. You bastards. >.< Titles seem to be far more important than the sex of the holder. Same-sex relationships aren't discouraged, but they're not encouraged either. Semi-strict social structure, hence Carlos, the King's brother, was punished for marrying far below him and to the granddaughter of a supposed traitor. His wife was originally a Marchesa of dubious repute, divorced once, stubbornly kept the title, and insisted on still attending Court. Carlos' parents did not approve of the match, but they married anyway.
The Plot (so far)
Inspired by the song of the same name by The Decemberists, but let loose to find its own way. Its evolved into its own beast though with the same premise, if you can call it that. It does begin/start/center around the coronation of the infanta, a young boy found in a basket in the river by the queen and adopted as her own. But we've got all sorts of other issues as well.
The King's brother Carlos was supposed to be king, but he disgraced himself by marriage and forced to hand over his crown, leaving way for his sister to take over, which is when the plot started to go a bit wonky; she shoved poor Carlos out of the way and took it for herself because she didn't think Carlos was fit to rule -- she scares me a little. D: Though because she also took a female Queen, Carlos was manipulated/humiliated into fathering heirs with the Queen (cos I don't do incest. :P) to continue the family line. Not that anyone knows, of course. If they did know, apparently Carlos would be made King instead (don't ask me how, that was the implied repercussion I received from them.). Didn't stop a certain princess overhearing this information and panicking greatly though
Duque Adan is close to the King and intends to match up the King's second son Javier with his eldest daughter Catalina. The tension between the Duquesa and the barren Baronesa remains, but seems to have worked itself out already. o.O *wonders why I bother sometimes* They'd better start having sex when they go on their little women-only mountain jaunt or I'll be sorely disappointed.
Unknown to everyone, the new Infante was born of Carlos' wife, Andres, though she won't tell me the circumstances involved, apart from Carlos being far too busy and away travelling to have noticed. I may end up slashing Carlos with his French Prince Elan, just for kicks. She also implied some time spent at a monastery as well. I don't know who the father is, apart from not Carlos. But she is a dedicated wife and keep trying to budge Carlos into taking the crown back from his sister. Perhaps she thinks if she deflects everything to being about him, no one will bother with her. She also insisted that Isis should be written Ysis (pronunced yi-sis, apparently o.O) in this AU.
The Moroccan Royals are also arriving for their daughter Kiyane's wedding, which shakes the palace up as well. Amina, Kiyane's sister, is bringing sweets from Morocco. Apparently this is a good thing, according to Prince Rafael.
So yeah. Fun. Imma go sleep soon. XD
