Still working on them, but here they are so far.
Francis Xavier: tiny cute 18 year old gay uni student. Xavier isn't his last name, but he likes it better. Likes raves and long scarves.
Chloe Mildura: tall 20-something graphics artist, freelance cartoonist and amateur burlesque performer. Changes her hair to match her mood.
Damon Kenthurst: 25 year old metal head, drummer and martial artist. Not entirely sure what he does, apart from bash on his drums, drink and polish his precious katana. Bit of a lazy rebel.
They're all characters that have come into being in the last year or two, and they spent all day badgering me into writing them and developing them properly.
As for the plot, I adopted it from one aMUTINOUSmind posted in the Adopt a Plot thread on the NaNo boards and have had fun tweaking it for my own purposes.
Original plot:
Set in a dystopian society where emotion is strongly checked by the government (emotion leads to loss of productivity, they say). The ultimate crime in this society is to feel Love for another person because Love is what led a past leader of the society to fall to ruin. Those who are deemed to Love others are labeled Amantes and are immediately sentenced to death in order to impose governmental rule over the masses and act as a deterrent. A main character should have to go through finding out that s/he is an Amante, and when s/he is sentenced to death, they are rescued at the last possible moment...
What I've got so far:
It's a little Brave New Worlds, but not. I see sex as permissable, encouraged even, amongst consenting adults, but love is forbidden. So we have Chloe, graphic artist and freelance cartoonist, whose finding her job difficult as she has to work under strict Government controls as to what she can and can't use in her work to keep emotion in check. Has to be carefu what symbols and colours and words she uses to ensure she doesn't do anything illegal. It's very hard to design an ad that makes the public desire the product, but does not induce love. There is as a consequence, little to no brand loyalty as that is considered a form of love and therefore banned. Friendships are reduced to acquaintences, as any show of love that's too great has the potential to be seen as toast ebil and means you will be deaded. (All this subject to change as I do more world-building.)
(Do I get bonus points for alluding to the fallen leader and his love as Rudd and Hockey? Using different names, of course. :P)
She freelances her cartoons to the daily newspapers, but there is a list of things she is not allowed to draw, including death, anything deemed unpatriotic or treasonous. Nothing insulting the Government, nothing involving love. That sort of thing. If she submits a cartoon that's considered illegal, she's liable to be arrested and charged, even if it would never be pubished. It's the principle of the thing. :P
She meets Damon in a bar one night and they get talking. End up drunk back at his place where they fuck and talk. They both realise they're Amantes, but never speak it out loud. Damon teaches her to meditate so they can communicate that way. It is through that method that they communicate about love and how to hide it.
They have this idea to startup an underground newspaper and to remain anonymous while doing so graffiti-ing censored cartoons all over the city to try and circumvent the Government censors. One that breaks all the rules. This is how Francis is drawn into it as he discovers the existence of this newspaper at uni and wants to help. He lost one of his closest mates as an Amantes and is still cut up about it. He hides his grief and anger well, but it still hurts.
...It needs more work, I know this. But it's more than I had yesterday. XD
And don't get me started on titles. I haven't even thought that far ahead yet. XD
