Summary: Chas runs until another werewolf pack finds him, and their reaction isn’t quite what he expects, as grateful as he is for their hospitality.

Pack
Chas ran into the night. He only thing driving him was a desperate need to run away and hide. He had no destination in mind, and wasn’t aware of where he was going, just as long as he was mostly out of sight and unhindered in his escape. He came to a forest on the edge of a wide road. He stopped and looked around.

It was only when he’d stopped that his body had a chance to remind him he was in fact injured and exhausted and it would not carry him much further. He leant against a tree as his legs threatened to collapse under him. He sniffed the air, trying to find his bearings. If there was anything suspicious there, he was in no state to recognise it. He had never strayed from Andrew’s territory before and he was suddenly unsure if there was anything out there that might hurt him. He wasn’t certain there weren’t any other werewolves out there, though Andrew had told him there were plenty around who had marked out their own patches of territory.

At the sound of an approaching car, Chas decided not to hang around any longer and find somewhere to rest until he became human again. He glanced around him before heading into the forest. He stopped at last when he found a large tree out of sight from the main road and lay down at its base. He barely had enough energy to lick his wounds properly before he was quickly falling asleep.

Unknown to Chas, he had stumbled upon the territory of another werewolf pack. Two of them were out hunting, the alpha and beta males. The two werewolves had caught scent of an unknown werewolf as they hunted through their patch of forest. Any intruder into their territory needed to be dealt with.

They found Chas eventually, though what they thought was an adult in the throes of bloodlust was in fact a juvenile curled against the base of a tree, his fur covered with dry blood. They approached cautiously. A werewolf was still a werewolf, no matter how weak he appeared.

“Think he’s been attacked?” the beta male said.

“No idea. Smells like an adult. Sort of. Looks like a pup,” the alpha male said.

“We should kill him anyway. Can’t take any chances.”

The alpha male approached Chas and nudged him with his foot. “Oi, pup, you still alive?”

Chas whined and curled up. “No, please. I didn’t mean to do it.”

The second crouched in front of him and lifted his head up to take a look at him. “Do what? You been killing, have you? Why does a pup smell like an adult?”

Chas looked up to see two werewolves in front of him. They were both clearly adults, and Chas was surprised they hadn’t killed him yet. “I killed a human last night. I couldn’t stop myself.”

“So why are you here then? Got a name, pup?” the second said.

“Chas. I fled. I left-” Chas couldn’t find the right word to describe Andrew. Friend? Lover? Mate? Mentor? Parent? “I left another to take the fall.”

“Sneaky bastard. Left your father behind, did you? Well, kid’s gotta leave home some time,” the first said.

“He wasn’t my father. He didn’t bite me,” Chas said.

The second werewolf leaned in and smelt Chas’ fur, yanking hard on the nape of his neck. “Hmm, you’re a city boy. Been a while since we ran down there, isn’t it? Still, I recognise the scent of that bitch any day. He told you not to kill humans, didn’t he?”

“He doesn’t kill humans on principle. It made sense to me so I didn’t question it,” Chas said.

“Yeah, that’s the one. Come on, pup, we’ll show you what real werewolves are like,” the second said.

Chas found himself pulled to his feet. These two werewolves were bigger than him. The still-juvenile wolf mind decided it probably wasn’t a good idea to take them on any time soon, and let them lead him off.

The pack lived in a small cave towards the centre of their forest. The alpha had mentioned the rest of their pack was out hunting still, though he hadn’t said exactly how big the pack was. The cave felt a little creepy to Chas. It stunk of other werewolves that Chas didn’t know. He wondered if they wouldn’t just kill him anyway.

“Do you guys live here all the time?” Chas said.

“Of course. We have to guard our territory,” the alpha said. “I’m Adam, by the way. He’s Wil.”

“I’m not Wil, I’m Talon,” the beta corrected.

“You don’t even have talons. Don’t confuse the poor pup. He looks like he’s about to faint,” Adam said.

Wil rolled his eyes, but decided against challenging him. He kept back as Adam took charge of their new pup.

“I’m okay. How long til we change back anyway? I have no idea,” Chas said.

“You don’t have to if you don’t want to. We tend to stay like this for a few days. It’s our weekend before we go back to being human again,” Adam said.

“I didn’t know you could do that. How do you do that?” Chas said.

“It takes time, practice, and patience, and a little magic. It’s our little secret, okay?” Adam said. “So. Now that we’ve got you, what shall we do with you? I don’t particularly feel like mauling you to death-”

“Don’t, mate, I just cleaned this place up from our last meal,” Wil interjected.

“So, Chas. Decisions. You could probably do with a bit of a rest, you don’t look up to travelling back to the city in your current state, and I’m hardly one to allow your mate to get you back too soon. Wanna run with us for a while?” Adam said.

“You’re right. I don’t feel like running back tonight. Maybe I will stay for a while,” Chas said.

“Wil, stay here and wait for the others. Chas and I are going out,” Adam said, wrapping an arm around Chas’ shoulder.

“Don’t be too long. Moon’s gonna set soon. He’ll be human again,” Wil said.

But the warning was lost on them as Adam and Chas left the cave.

Adam took Chas to a spot above the cave where they could look out over the forest. It was rocky and more exposed than down amongst the trees. The moon was still visible in the sky, though it was easier to feel than see. Chas knew its power was waning. Soon, he would transform back to his human form. They perched on the rock and watched the land around them.

“You’re one lucky pup, you are. If you’d fled south, I doubt you’d have gotten out alive. They’re fiercely territorial down there. Good thing we’re not so bad. Besides, you’re still a pup. You could do with a guiding hand, rather than a thrashing, which I see you’ve already had,” Adam said.

“I just ran. I had no idea where I was going. I hope Andrew’s okay. I kinda left him in the middle of a park bleeding to death next to the body,” Chas said.

“Andrew’s not the sort to just lie there and let them come. He’d have escaped somehow, even if you’d kicked his arse. He’s not stupid. Probably won’t take you back easily though. That’s one big betrayal you handed him,” Adam said.

“I know. I’m still coming to terms with that. I don’t even know what happened. I just… the scent became an obsession and the wolf mind took over. And then Andrew came and we fought and I left him there. I’ve only ever killed animals before, you know, for food. Andrew always said not to kill humans, and he did a good job of keeping me away from temptation. I don’t know. Whoever he was that I killed, he smelt funny. I just knew I needed to deal with him. That’s all I remember,” Chas said.

“Don’t worry, pup. There comes a time when every werewolf takes their first human life. Some deal with it better than others. Some turn it into sport. Others, like Andrew, refuse to do it again. It’s an individual thing,” Adam said.

Chas sighed and shifted closer to Adam, curling into his embrace. “I suppose I’ll be the omega wolf, right?”

Adam appeared to grin and brought him close. “Not while you’re still a pup, though I’m alpha male around here so don’t piss me off, okay? Wil’s my second. The rest will fall into place when you meet them. Now enough talk. I wanna fuck you before you change back. And don’t worry, I know how long til the moon sets, and we’ve got a couple of hours,” Adam said.

“I did notice. If you were trying to hide your lust, you failed,” Chas said.

“I was just making sure you weren’t surprised. I only use force on werewolves I don’t plan on being nice to,” Adam said.

Adam ran his claws through Chas’ fur and growled in his ear. Chas whined quietly and grasped his arms as Adam moved on top of him. Chas became well aware of their differing sizes, and that even though he’d been bigger than Andrew, he was most certainly not bigger than Adam, not by a long shot. Then again, he was the bitch, and who was he to fight with an alpha werewolf who had been so kind as to not kill him on first sight?

Chas was in human form when he returned with Adam. Adam hadn’t transformed; he was still in his werewolf form, and Chas felt even smaller in his arms than he had before. Some nurturing by Adam had left him with fewer wounds than he might’ve done otherwise, of which Chas was grateful. He was, however, covered in scars, and also naked. By then, the rest of the pack had returned, and they had brought enough to feed them for another day or two.

“Oi, Wil, go get our new pup some clothes. He needs warming up,” Adam said.

“This way, pup. Good thing I brought spares,” Wil said, eyeing Adam suspiciously.

“Who’s that then? Since when did we bring in humans?” one of the others said. It was a female, and the biggest female at that.

“New pup. Our old mate Andrew used to take care of him. He’s not even two yet. Figured we’d take him in for a bit. He was injured anyway, so he hardly posed a threat,” Adam said.

The alpha female approached and rested her arms on Adam’s shoulders. “Okay. The pup can stay. But only because he used to be Andrew’s. He’s not mine though, so you can look after him.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll teach him a thing or two before I kick him out. That’ll teach Andrew to betray us. A werewolf never forgets, you know,” Adam said.

Adam hugged her close before turning his attention to their food. He took his share and left them to it. Chas would need feeding and Adam wasn’t sure he’d accept raw meat as a human. As he helped Chas build a fire, he pondered his next move. He had been waiting a long time for a chance like this. He’d had a feeling things were about to change when he’d seen the moon rise earlier in the day. Adam wouldn’t rush; there was no need. A chance like this only comes along once and he had no desire to waste it.

He watched Chas eating. Sometimes he forgot how small humans were. They lay by the fire, Chas curled into his warm body. Adam stroked his hair gently and rocked him into sleep.
